History and About Us

The Tschardakenhof

Tracing rural life in the 19th century. With the Tschardakenhof, a rare and authentic testimony of typical small-scale rural architecture in today’s Middle Burgenland has been preserved.

«Holiday with History»

The Tschardakenhof takes its name from the wooden corn drying and storage hut, the Tschardake, and its history can be traced back to 1829. Due to frequent flooding of the Ragnitz, the village of Lutzmannsburg had to be systematically relocated to its present site. One of the very first buildings constructed here was the Tschardakenhof. Today it remains one of the few surviving examples of the so-called Streckhof — a characteristic type of farmhouse once common in 19th-century Middle Burgenland.

What makes this traditional rural building style so special is that the living quarters, stables and barns were not built separately, but directly connected to one another. With this unity of living and working spaces, the Streckhof reflects the rural lifestyle of the 19th century, a time when a strict separation between home and work was still unknown.

Throughout its long and eventful history, the Tschardakenhof was largely untouched by the waves of modernization in the 20th century. At times, it even served as a local museum and youth center, before being placed under monument protection in 2017. In spring 2021, we began the careful renovation and restoration of the building.

From the former living and farm spaces, five luxuriously furnished apartments were create fd — each still reflecting its original layout and name. The names “Anger”, “Weinkeller”, “Viecherei”, “Hofstatt” and “Troadkasten” reveal where people once lived, wine was made, horses were kept and grain was stored.

The effort was well worth it. In December 2021, the Tschardakenhof was honored with the Special Award for the Preservation of Streckhöfe in Burgenland. Giving our guests from now on the pleasant feeling of not just staying somewhere good — but somewhere truly outstanding.
